Publicity stunt for Operation Duryodhana?

KalyaniKalyani still retains the same charm. She says she is willing to act provided she gets roles like the one she did in Vasantham. “I worked in Munna because Dil Raju requested me, he is a friend and I couldn’t say no,” tells Kalyani to Cinema Prapancham.

According to reports posters are being pulled down in Hyderabad and that is because of the following lines printed in the poster Muslim quit India, Hindusthan lo Hinduvule undaali.

Is this a publicity stunt for Operation Duryodhana? “I don’t think so, all this appears in the flashback. I too don’t know much because I’m aware of my scenes only. It has nothing to do with communal riots or anything inflammatory. From what little I know I can say that it’s just an act of personal revenge. Villain gang na meedha na pillala meedha kopam tho Srikanth ni target chestaaru. Srikanth is a police inspector.”

About her husband’s (Sooriya Kiran) film Raju Bhai Kalyani is content, she says, “Raju Bhai is heading towards 50 days and the audio is a hit.”

Meanwhile director Posani says, “I challenge anyone to show me such material. Evaro pani paata leni vaadu chesina pani idhi. Oka circle inspector politics loki vacchi society ni baagu cheddam ani choosthadu. Anni positive dialogues unnayi. Idhi Hindu Muslim pavitranga unde Bharata desam.”

Simple and low profile get-together

Chandra Siddharth receiving the memento from KRR
Ramanaidu should excuse me for this. Pani kattukuni stage meedhiki yekkinchi mari photo teeyinchamu ee pose lo. Look at the poster behind, looks like this black shirt is his favourite ippatiki enni saarlu vesukunnaro, he wore the same one this evening too. Ramanaidu tells me all his clothes are from Gabbana (Mumbai).

ANR and Ramanaidu both posed with the heroines and the photographers had a nice time clicking away to glory. ANR’s speech was boring, wonder why they trouble him at this age making him wait till 9:30 p.m., he came just because it was his grandson’s moment.

AVS compered the programme and it made us sweat, the actor thinks calling people with wrong names repeatedly sounds humourous. Someone should try addressing him as SVA or VAS and say sorry. The aunties (Kavitha, etc.) looked comfy in the kanjeevarams in the hot evening and the girls played it easy in their chiffons. It was difficult to say who looked pretty Parvati or Sneha.

Sneha’s cute bespectacled sister sat bang opposite and kept teasing her. She stopped Kavitha, almost squatted and adjusted her saree. It was Chandra Siddarth’s evening but Ramanaidu stole the show. The senti director showered lavish praise on Parvati for taking up a role like that in the beginning of her career. Boss, ee rojullo roles gurinchi evaru aalochisthunnaru, what matters is make hay while the sun shines.

Venky looked better and rejuvenated. He is completely into the action film Tulasi. Suresh sounded besotted with Bheja Fry and wondered why we don’t find such script writers. You tell me how to go about it he asked me. That’s not the answer boss, we want good cinema from you.

What bugged us the most was the deafening background music when Sumanth or some other personality came over to take the memento. Adhi antha avasarama? EVV cribbed that he is attending atleast four functions every day but he resolved very soon he is going to stop attending flop movie functions. “Em chestam andi tappatledhu, inka ippatinundi serious ga ‘No’ ani chepestha, janaalni mislead chestunnamu.” Better late than never EVV garu.

Valla cinema chandalam manadhi brahmandam

A poster of Gopi-goda meedha pilli
Siva Nageswara Rao and Janardhan Maharshi are buddies. They have this habit of watching films first day first show and I happened to be there quite a few times watching them throw supposedly witty comments while the film is on. Proof? Chinnodu, Classmates etc. etc. The idea is to have fun fine but wait. One day Maharshi’s Gopi-goda meedha pilli released and Siva Nageswara Rao called our Big B and enquired, ‘Cinema ela undhi?’ Big B replied, “Chettha la undhi.” He then asked the director meeku ela undhi? He said, ‘Baane vundhi.’

You know what happened for Bhookailas what Siva Nageswara Rao told our colleague, refer this post. Coming back to Gopi…Lakshmi Devi Vishnu Murthy ni vadili bhoomi midaki vacchi samanya manavudiki line veyyadam eeyana cinemallone choostham. Gopi-goda meeda pilli cilmax adhi. Aa satire vere religion devulla meedha vesi unte ee paatiki sagam Hyderabad dvamsam ayyedhi. I’m sure he might have read about the imprisoned Arts student who tried graffiti on a Hindu goddess.

Kahaaneelu cheppoddhu

Janardhan MaharshiJanardhan Maharshi is an excellent narrator, story teller. Katha vinnantha sepu nice ga untadhi, even Nagarjuna flipped for his story (Akka Baavekkada). He holds the credit of making EVV create three films based on one theme out of which only one worked…Kanyaadanam, Chaala Bagundhi and Maa aavida meedha ottu mee aavida chaala manchidhi. A sishya of Tanikella Bharani he has the reputation of watching all South Indian films, ikkada o bit, akkada o bit and amalgamates it into one neat story (he is said to have the best collection of story ideas from Tamil films). The word that he is giving flops to all must have stung him hard so he made Gopi-Goda Meedha Pilli and gifted a flop to himself. That must silence his detractors. Heard he gave the ‘treatment’ to Bhookailas and many others cooked the broth. Siva Nageswara Rao no wonder kangaaru padipoyi loaded the film with sentiment in the second half. Better luck next time.

Nenu heroine, veshya paatra cheyyanu

Navneet KaurThus spoke Navneet Kaur. Madame Kaur was reportedly offered a song/a brief vamp-like role in EVV’s film but she refused and the role apparently is going to Parvati Melton.

Jaya’s next venture

Jaya B.Buoyed by the super success of Gundammagari Manavadu, Jaya is on the move. Sources say she is planning to make a love story which is also a quasi-comedy with Naresh as the hero, but roping Naresh can’t be easy. He’s not another comedian waiting to grab a role. It’s just not money which is important but he is keen on the type of role he is going to play, he’s game for an anti-hero character too!

Charming Mr. Bee

Mr. WeatherbeeThis can’t be false, not atleast the obesity of the industrywala or his opulent guest house surrounded by security and gunmen. But wonder how he squeezes himself in through the slim entrance of the guest house with the starlet who’s worked as a heroine in a few films. He reminds me of Mr. Weatherbee and yards of turkey towel wrapped around his tummy. Sources say he strikes friendship at functions when he is asked to light the lamp and she helps him with the candle. The next thing you know is that the starlet or the singer has been signed for his film.

Seat khaayam, sweet khaayam

RojaWe thought only Nannapaneni Rajakumari is a good host, but Roja out did her. Roja might not be a culinary expert whipping up the greatest of ‘chepala pulusu’ but she nearly knows how to score marks through distributing food packets and water sachets at Mahanadu. The people flipped for her and how couldn’t she, Tirupati is her home town and the off screen drama was on the home turf. Last time she went through tough times but don’t underestimate her, the scorpion woman is surely going to get a Rajyasabha seat this time if that is what she is aiming for and if TDP comes to power.

I like the way they wax eloquent on issues like empowerment, exploitation, child labour, etc., just before they announce their retirement from films and make their political ambitions clear. It is obvious that celebs love to cling on to money or power or high society once they move out from the cameras. Some say society, politics some say animals…as if the country is crying for compassion!

But one man begs to differ, he is out of politics and wants to do social service. D. Ramanaidu visted the Prez yesterday and reaffirmed his commitment to the poor sections of the society. He has ‘adopted’ Prakasam village and will be providing monetary help to all the students who are unable to appear for the SSC exams. His friends too have each taken a village for development.

Another Ileana in the making

IleanaThere is a sentiment in the industry that a heroine once selected and later on rejected by a big director if cast in some other movie will be a big heroine which happened with Ramyakrishna, Rambha and more recently Ileana who was the first choice was Dhairyam beside Nitin (Ippatiki kooda Nitin curses Teja for removing Ileana). After a couple of days shooting she was replaced by Raima Sen. We hear that Angrita the original choice of Krishna Vamsi’s Chandamaama may be the heroine of Bunny-Bhaskar film for which a test shoot is going on in Annapurna Studios and the camera man is Vijay C. Chakravarthy. Looks like the tussle is resolved.

Do wannabe actors need to be trained?

Our Telugu film industry thirsts for more actors and that too those who are trained. Often we see many good-looking actors who have great voices, but it is hard to find one who is fully equipped to take on a challenging role. According to a survey, 70 percent of the current crop of actors in the Telugu film industry are professionally trained. Attending an acting school is increasingly seen as imperative for a sustainable career. Training initiates actors to many components of acting but unfortunately for us in Andhra Pradesh, the institutes do not provide career advice and support in finding work that can make the difference between success and failure.

Andhra Pradesh has only five training schools - Satyanand’s, Pradeep Sai’s, Devadas Kanakala’s, Madhu Film Institute, Dikshit theatre group and Bikshu’s. Recently Suresh Babu announced his plans to come up with a Film Institute at the Ramanaidu Studios. Director Tammareddy Bharadwaja says that the above mentioned institutes are all independent bodies. “Moreover, people who go there to get trained are sons or nephews of actors and producers who’ve already decided to make acting as a career. They outnumber the newcomers who are not related to the industry. Apart from Rajnikant, Chiranjeevi and Rajendra Prasad, who are the other trained actors? And among women, apart from Laya, Veda and Suhasini we haven’t seen any fresh faces.”

Bhardawaja adds, “We cannot ask the government to have a tie-up with such institutes because that creates more problems like reservations and scarcity of films, which might lead to unrest. The Ramanaidu Film Institute will be tentatively thrown open in June but we have to rethink on the logistics, maintenance, and it is not beneficial commercially. Teachers are a major problem; for the past 10 years we have been facing this problem, we need teachers for all the technical crafts too. The dearth of good actors is also partly because of media focus; they cannot cope with the harsh and constant media glare.”

An industry source quotes that it’s a misnomer that all trained and talented people get work in the industry. The truth is that not everyone can be a star and becoming an actor may not guarantee wealth. It is true that much of the employment in the industry is based on luck and there can be uncertainty about where the next offer will come from. However, the desire to act and the personal rewards of doing something that inspires you can be immense.

On the contrary, when you enter the industry completely trained, the attitude of the filmmakers can put you off. You could be branded as head strong and arrogant for even asking as to what role you could be playing in the film that’s being offered to you. Many actors undertake work that utilises their skills in a huge range of areas and some actors go on to form their own acting or media companies while some others are inclined towards theatre. Acting is instinctive, and actors are rather born, like poets, or writers, but they can practise hard and can be intelligent about how they work. Trained or inborn, the film industry needs fresh blood. Film education is vital for the revitalisation of the Telugu film industry.
