Anuranan - Bengali
Historical references in our cinema have it that both the heroes and villains are of the same height. Idhi nenu cheppina matter kaadhu. In the bengali film Anuranan director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s character, a french women, talks of our Indian film characters, when she sees Rahul Bose and expected him to be taller.
Well in the film atleast Rahul Bose rises above expectations with his work but talking of the film it delves into the myriad relationships of four individuals. Rahul (Rahul Bose) and Nandita (Rituparna Sengupta) live in London, they have moved there after losing their baby. They try to get on with their lives and Rahul makes an effort to keep Nandita happy but there is something amiss in their relationship though they love each other. Rahul gets a transfer to Kolkata and they meet up with his colleague Amit (Rajat Kapoor) and Preeti (Raima Sen). Amit is too immersed in his stocks and has hardly anytime for his wife Preeti who always is on a different plane. She is warned by her husband that she would make a choas out of her life and that is exactly what happens.
Preeti finds Rahul’s company invigorating and says that she is jealous of Nandita. There are lot of meetings between Preeti and Rahul, intelligent conversations, a longing to meet each other and talk and lot of positive vibes. This happens to a lot of us. We might suddenly bump into a stranger one day and find that there are lot of things to talk, the interactions give a resonance (Anuranan) that becomes a purpose to live, that someone is there to listen to, agree with, talk too. Preeti yearns for freedom, to fly like a bird but in the end her wings are clipped.
Nandita does tell her that freedom lies in the spirit and she can soar but isn’t that too late? Preeti goes to meet Rahul in the Himalayas and suddenly one morning Rahul is found dead. Preeti’s presence is mistaken and there begins the story. Very vague way of ending the film, and this is also the director’s debut venture into direction.
