I was in chennai, around 18. I met my husband to be Prabhu at a computer institute. He was short, dark, drooping shoulders and one-eyed. His mother wanted him to study computers and go abroad. It didn’t take much time for him to propose to me, maybe it was the second or third meeting.I was shocked..I hardly knew this man, haven’t even fallen in love and he wanted to marry me. I refused but we did keep talking to each other. He was his mother’s pet and she wanted him to marry her grand daughter. My husband’s mother was already married and had a daughter by her first marriage.

She later met my father-in-law DNR who was c/o platform. My mother in law didn’t like the fact that with so much of power, money and people at her beck and call, she couldn’t get her son married to her grand daughter. When she came to know that he was interested in me she ruled out the proposal. She even stopped Prabhu from coming to the institute.
Just a day before his house arrest, Prabhu came to me and said that there was no choice, I had to marry him otherwise he would kill himself. I laughed it off but later it did bother me as to why he wasn’t coming to the institute. After a few days I took the telephone number and spoke to him. I told him I would meet him at a particular temple. He did come and it was the same old story. I realised that this man had clean intentions.
I sold some my ring as he didn’t have anything with him at the moment and got married immediately. He assured me that his mother would accept us once the wedding was over. But it was not to be. She kept taking him away every now and then, periodically and I would get worried. I staged a dharna once and my father -in-law intervened. He said he would give us a flat to stay, it was a rented flat. I hardly had a gas stove. We were leading a hand to mouth existence. (Part-1)
