Swapna Dutt: Na Vooru Na TV
Swapna Dutt is just 25 and she is the Managing Director of Local TV. Daughter of producer Aswani Dutt, she is the oldest among her two siblings and has completed Masters in Business Administration in the US. After returning home, her father expected her to take over his business but she was not completely ready . “I was hanging around my dad doing nothing, not convinced about the huge line of films he was committed to. The one song, one fight format is something beyond my understanding. I was very sure about doing something in entertainment one day. I want to open a different gate to the audience,” she tells enthusiastically.
The young lady along with her business partner, friend and CEO of Local TV, Vishnu are currently working, eating and sleeping television – thinking of concepts, casting, styling, selecting technicians, shooting and scheduling, marketing and acquiring the new skills required to succeed. This entrepreneur’s brush with entertainment began during the shooting of Jai Chiranjeeva while she was in the US. She had handled the offshore schedule completely and later on took charge of the Zee Sa re ga ma pa and a couple of projects for ETV . Now she is all set to have complete control of a channel.
“I think global but I’m essentially a local. I want to divert people’s attention to Local TV and show that a telugu television could be like this also,” says Swapna. The young lady knows her niche audience quite well and targets especially one sector of the Andhra youth who don’t watch telugu television.It is a city centric channel with the inimitable flavor of each city thrown in large doses. Local TV is nothing but an FM on television and the slogan of the channel is Na Vooru Na TV. She adds, “It will be 60% entertainment and 40% news, there will be plenty of reality shows, talk shows, film based programmes but absolutely no serials.My reality shows will not be harsh, it will only encourage not demoralize a participant.”
So is she another Ekta kapoor in the making? Swapna is not amused, she doesn’t like comparisons but yes, she has like Ekta, films on her mind too. She says that very soon she will make a film for the multiplex audiences, very small and very sweet.” I am working towards creating a brand name for myself – my Local TV and my films as well. I’m hiring only new anchors and I’m telling them not to look this side if they want to use Local TV as a stepping stone to a career in films.The small tube has it’s own audience and I want to work with only those who look to television as a career” , she adds.
Men are more attached to their daughters than sons, and Aswani Dutt is no exception. He has given his three daughters ample freedom to choose their careers. The second one is Priyanka and she is into advertising and the third is Sravanthi, doing hotel management in London. What about her personal life, is she seeing someone? “No’, screams Swapna. I honestly tried having a conversation with some very eligible bachelors that my mum looked out for me but I failed. Besides at this mode of my life, a relationship is not justified. I’m married to my work and my work schedules are completely insane. Look, we don’t even break for lunch!.” …

One thing all these media people who act too hifi should realize is that if it weren’t for our different preferences, like song dance and fights , these people wouldn’t even stand a chance when competing with Hollywood. In essential its their bread and butter and they don’t realize that.
Well tollywood is not known for its smart actors I guess, like the heroes who in public functions will only speak in English, all these people need to realize that if everyone started to speak and behave like them…then no one would watch their movies. Instead of embracing the thing that has given them all they have they try to distance away from it.
IMO This girl has got her niche all the way wrong, why would a audience who don’t watch telugu TV watch hers ? when there is a flood of better produced stuff available at ease ? Infact this sect isn’t a niche but the opposite of it as they have abundant of options available to them. If at all there is a niche like that then serials like Yuva wouldnt be failing and also this niche looks like its too small to support a serial let alone a channel.

I agree with what you are saying when it comes to “I do not like the one fight, one song format” etc, what people i.e “the psuedo-intellectual” types, do not understand is that one can make a very excellent movie within that format, it just doesn’t have to be a “Subhash Chandra Bose”, look at Mani Ratnam, he is successful because he makes wonderful movies with a fight and a dance. He makes no qualms about it and people love him.
Rejecting the song and dance pictures because they have a song and dance is stupid, but then saying that we cannot compete with western cinema if we reject the traditional way of making movies is also stupid, do not get carried over by the special effects of hollywood movies, anyone can make a better action movies without a high effects budget, we can also make sensible movies (seen Micheal Clayton?) without a high budget. It’s only the imagination and talent that limits anybody.
I also agree that it isn’t a big deal if you have done an MBA in USA because there are some idiots coming out of Harvard and there are some idiots coming out of Andhra University. What matters is what they do, in this case, let us just wait and see what she does with the channel of hers. My guess is it would have the standards once Siti Channel had once (remember ?). I would say give her some credit till she does what she believes in.
Yuva was, is and will be a bad imitation of ‘Happy Days’ and ‘Friends’, in other words crap but I like what you say.

Off late, it was noticed that a lot of movie related news has been edited from the news channels and just when folks are trying to figure out what is the reason behind it, here is something which has come to our notice through our reliable sources and good friends.
It is heard that the man behind all this happens to be Aswini Dutt who has been spinning the wheel behind to ensure that no movie news comes in the news channels. The reason being he is on the way to launch a new channel and for this he has influenced folks like K S Rama Rao and Allu Aravind to cut the news links from the film industry to the media.
However, his plans seem to have not gone far in the success path since the timely intervention of Dasari Narayana Rao has put a barrier to his plans. Now it is not sure what his next step is going to be like but then those who have heard this have been baffled by the thoughts of such an esteemed film maker.
hmm I dont know if my last post was kind of too critical, but yea all the best to her. Just that been seeing a lot of these false pretenses from these filmy ppl ….only if i didn’t give a damn about Telugu films ……
