Are we feeding our children vegetables and fruits or fertilizers? Use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides are one side causing health hazards, which can not be quantified. Once a pesticide is sprayed one is not supposed to pluck the vegetables for atleast seven to fifteen days. But now by afternoon or next morning the vegtables are picked, transported and even sold. All we do is plain cleaning with water, to some extent if boiled the hazardous effect is lessened. However now and then we find press reports saying that even breast milk also contain pesticide residues. This is because of consuming vegetables&fruits grown with chemical pesticides. Other side farming with chemicals is increasing production cost, not assuring crop production and resulting in suicides of farmers. At present govenment is promoting Organic farming, but not seriously. Few farmers are voluntirily shifting to Organic Farming .Due to better keeping quality of organically grown produce like grapes, mangoes they are fetching better price and the are happy. But buying organic food, rice or vegetables, fruits is expensive. It is double or triple the price. So what does one do? Is education of farmers in this area enough? Careful tests over many years seem to indicate that pesticides can safely be used on fruit and vegetables without damage to human health, provided growers follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
How safe is the food that we eat?
