Assistant directors cry foul
Most of the directors in TFI have around 6 to 8 assistant directors and all of them don’t carry a the union card with them. Union members who work as assistant directors draw less than 500 per day and if they complain, they don’t get to work in the next film. If they protest another asssitant director is taken and this time he/she is a recommended candidate. Most candidates come to the sets with recommendation letters most prominently to work for VV Vinayak. These letters are from either top producers, directors or a lady minister who is from the government. These new people do not form a part of the union but draw high salaries. Except for Rajamouli it’s heard none of the directors treat their assistant directors generously. Ask any union head for a comment and they will say, what more can we do for them? Aren’t we giving them breakfast, lunch, travel expenses etc. Kontha mandhi previous month salaries, and even three or four month wages eggodthaaru. Those who come to check if the set assistants have cards or not don’t bother to tally the names that appear on the credits of the film and those that appear on the work sheet.

I know one guy who worked as Assistant Director for Satyam movie produced by none other than Nagarjuna. He used to get 4000 Rs per month.

@Sunitha less than 500 ok but whats the minimum?? yendukantee 400 per day with food and travelling expenses is a good salary. Don’t you think so??

Oops, I misread that as 500 a month, 500 a day is still pathetic when you take into account the amount of work they do.
It’s not pathetic but not too shabby as well.

it indeed is a decent “stipend”. for most of the assistant directors, it is not just a job. it is a learning opportunity.
There used to be a joke on dasari & kodi, that the assistant director had to work like a servant at home.. the way it happens in police ranks..

peolple tend to forget that these asst. drirectors work for more than one director. so the quetion of earning a lesser salary doesnt arise. professional degree holders are earning lesser salries than them.

If asst directors feel that they earn less - they can go for another jobs which pay more than that. Asst director ga chesetapudu aa candidate lo talent kanipinchi edayina chance vaste - he will become crorepati in 2-3 yrs. Then he also will pay same ‘less than 500′ to his assts.
saanubhooti choopinchadaaniki - inta kante pedda samasyalu chala vunnayi prapancham lo (even cinema prapancham lo)

Hi.. I understood many misunderstood that A.D’s are paid 500×30=15000/-… in practical they are paid from 3,000 to 10,000/- and any other department people are paid on daily wise which is not less than 600 per day and they keep working 365 days .. but what abt A.D’s? They say u people earn crores when u become Director’s.. How many A.D.’s did that..? Regd. learning experience..it’s not learning in every pic. and every dir, needs Experienced A.D’s other than Apprentices. I don’t think either Unions or some one else can do something… unless Directors do understand they are also A.D’s and the problems they faced financially with families as A,D’s. More than Director’s should open their eyes and look at Choreographer;s Stunt Masters etc. Managers etc. how their assts. draw and feel ashame if their assts. are not paid properly. Directors u have to take care of your Assistants and see that they get good pay which make them work cautiously with love and sincerity towards their Director.
